Neurocutaneous melanosis and temporal lobe tumor in a child: MR study.

چکیده
The concept of neurocutaneous melanosis was described in 1948 by Van Bogaert [1] as a nonfamilial neuroectodermal dysplasia, but the first report of an individual with stigmata of neurocutaneous melanosis was made by Rokitansky [2] in 1861. The criteria to be met for diagnosis are large multiple pigmented skin nevi (more than 20 em in diameter) with an excess of melanotic cells in the leptomeninges, no malignant melanomatous transformation of the involved skin, and no evidence of malignant melanoma in any organ other than the nervous system. Until recently, diagnosis of involvement of the leptomeninges was impossible in vivo. MR imaging can be used now to diagnose such an involvement. The patient reported here is extremely unusual: He had typical skin involvement , but his intracerebral melanoma did not involve the leptomeninges. MR showed an unusual signal appearance, probably associated with the degree of enhancement of paramagnetic relaxation , that allowed us to diagnose a melanotic tumor even though the expected leptomeningeal involvement was absent.

MR of neurocutaneous melanosis.
PURPOSE To describe the MR findings of neurocutaneous melanosis in the brain and correlate these with the known pathology and proposed embryologic basis of this disorder. METHODS The brain (seven patients) and spine (three patients) MR scans of seven patients with neurocutaneous melanosis were retrospectively reviewed. In two patients, findings were confirmed at surgery. The pattern of centra...
متن کاملNeurocutaneous Melanosis Presenting as Chronic Partial Epilepsy
BACKGROUND Neurocutaneous melanosis (NCM) is a rare neurocutaneous syndrome characterized by the presence of multiple congenital melanocytic nevi (CMN) and the proliferation of melanocytes in the central nervous system, usually involving the leptomeninges. Chronic partial epilepsy as a sole manifestation is rare in NCM. CASE REPORT A 32-year-old man suffering from chronic partial epilepsy pre...
متن کاملProgressive brainstem compression in an infant with neurocutaneous melanosis and Dandy-Walker complex following ventriculoperitoneal shunt placement for hydrocephalus. Case report.
Neurocutaneous melanosis (NM) coexisting with the Dandy-Walker complex (DWC) is a rare condition, with fewer than 15 cases reported in the literature. The authors present a case of an infant with NM and DWC suffering from progressive brainstem compression following ventriculoperitoneal (VP) shunt placement for hydrocephalus. This 1-year-old boy with congenital melanocytic nevi had met normal de...
متن کاملMR of parenchymal neurocutaneous melanosis.
Two cases of neurocutaneous melanosis are presented. MR showed hyperintense areas in the brain on short-repetition-time/short-echo-time sequences, compatible with intraparenchymal melanin deposits. No leptomeningeal abnormality was seen.
متن کاملAn unusual case of neurocutaneous melanosis.
The neurocutaneous melanosis (NCM) is a rare, neuroectodermal dysplasia defined by the association of giant or multiple, nonmalignant pigmented cutaneous nevi with leptomeningeal melanosis or melanoma. As a rule, the cerebral pathological substratum is characterized by a melanocytic infiltration of the leptomeninges, often leading to hydrocephalus. The most frequent clinical symptomatology star...
